Proverbs 27:9 “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” (NLT) Friendship is a two-way street, and we should both give and receive support to have a healthy relationship. We should build them up, and help them to become the best they can be. This verse tells us that we should encourage and support our friends. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (ESV) We should choose our friends wisely, and surround ourselves with people who will help us to grow in our faith and become better people. This verse tells us that we should be careful about the company we keep because they can influence us in a negative way. 1 Corinthians 15:33 “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” (NLT) This is why it is good to have at least one close friend because they can help us in many ways. Additionally, two people can achieve more than one person working alone. These verses tell us that it is better to have someone to help us because they can provide support and encouragement. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him-a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (ESV) For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. Ecclestiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. They will be like a brother to us, and we can rely on them in times of need. This proverb tells us that a true friend will always be there for us, even in the tough times. Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” (NIV) As we interact with others, we can help each other to become better people. This proverb tells us that we can learn from and grow in our relationships with other people. Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (NIV) This is what Jesus did for us, and it is an example of the kind of love that we should have for our closest friends and loved ones. This verse tells us that the greatest act of love is to lay down one’s life for another. John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (ESV)
